Respiratory Medicine plays a central role in assessing and managing Sleep‑Disordered Breathing, including Obstructive and Central Sleep Apnoea. Specialists diagnose these conditions using detailed Sleep Studies and select appropriate treatments, which may include CPAP therapy, Oral Appliance Therapy, nighttime Positional Devices, or Weight Management Strategies. Respiratory physicians also schedule Sleep Testing; collaborating closely with ENT surgeons, Dental Sleep Medicine and related Specialists to determine the most suitable treatment options for each patient.
Process of our Oral Appliance Therapy Program
1. Referral
Patients are typically seen by a Respiratory Consultant following a GP referral. The referral provides essential background information, including medical history, current symptoms, medications, and any relevant test results. This helps our clinical team prepare for your assessment and ensure the most appropriate care. If you already have a referral, our team will review it and contact you to arrange an appointment. If a referral has not yet been made, please speak with your GP or online health provider to initiate the process.
2. Sleep Study
Following a GP referral, and if clinically appropriate, Respiratory Consultants may prescribe a Sleep Study amongst other investigative tests. A Sleep Study may be completed in hospital or at home. Using advanced monitoring technology, the study records several features including breathing patterns, oxygen levels, heart rate, and movement during sleep. Test results inform an accurate diagnosis and guide the most effective treatment option for each patient.
3. Treatments
Following diagnosis, a Respiratory Consultant determines the most appropriate treatment based on the severity of your condition and individual circumstances. Treatment options may include CPAP therapy, Oral Appliance Therapy, positional support devices, or weight management strategies — often used in combination. Your consultant monitors treatment effectiveness, makes adjustments to optimise comfort and compliance, and collaborates with other specialists to address related health factors.
