Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT) is an important treatment for Sleep‑Disordered Breathing, particularly Mild to Moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and Primary Snoring. Customised, adjustable devices reposition the lower jaw and tongue to support the upper airway during sleep, and reduce airway collapse. OAT is often considered for patients who are intolerant to CPAP, or who prefer a less‑invasive alternative. Patients may be referred by GPs, Respiratory Physicians, ENT surgeons, or other specialists, with Dental Sleep Medicine Clinicians leading appliance selection, management, and follow‑up in collaboration with your doctor to improve your symptoms, sleep quality, and overall health.
Process of our Oral Appliance Therapy Program
1. First Step
If you believe you are a candidate for OAT, it is usually helpful to discuss your symptoms with your Respiratory Physician, GP, or another healthcare provider, so they can direct you towards the appropriate care. You can contact our clinic for more information, our team will review the information available and advise whether an appointment is appropriate or if further medical evaluation is needed.
2. Clinical Assessment
At your OAT appointment, a Dental Sleep Medicine specialist will examine your teeth, dental bite and jaw through clinic and radiological investigations to confirm, Oral Appliance Therapy is clinically appropriate. We then use advanced 3D digital scanners to create a high‑resolution model of your mouth, capturing the full architecture of your teeth for a bespoke fit.
3. Treatment
Following these assessments, a precision‑fitting appliance system is designed using your digital scan to ensure accuracy and comfort. Based on your sleep diagnosis and oral anatomy, we select from several medical‑grade device systems to determine which appliance design is best suited to your needs, and then fit and adjust it over time to optimise its effectiveness.
