Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeons play an important role in managing Sleep Disordered Breathing, including Snoring and Sleep Apnoea. They carry out detailed examinations of the nose, throat, and upper airway to identify structural problems that may contribute to obstruction during sleep. ENT surgeons can also arrange appropriate sleep testing and work closely with Sleep Physicians and Dental Sleep Specialists to determine the most suitable treatment options for patients. By addressing anatomical causes of airway narrowing, they help improve nocturnal breathing, reduce symptoms, and support better overall sleep quality and wellbeing.
Process of our Oral Appliance Therapy Program
1. Referral
Patients are typically seen by an ENT Surgeon following a GP referral. The referral provides essential background information, including medical history, current symptoms, medications, and any relevant test results. This helps our clinical team prepare for your assessment and ensure the most appropriate care. If you already have a referral, our team will review it and contact you to arrange an appointment. If a referral has not yet been made, please speak with your GP or online health provider to initiate the process.
2. Upper Airway Assessment
Following your referral, an ENT surgeon will conduct a detailed examination of your ears, nose, throat and upper airway. The examination may also assess your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and jaw structure, this may influence airway function. These assessments help identify structural issues, such as nasal obstruction, throat narrowing, jaw function, or other anatomical changes, that may contribute to Disrupted Breathing during sleep. In some cases, a small flexible camera (scope) is used to visualise the airway more clearly, helping determine the most appropriate treatment for your specific presentation.
3. Treatments
Following assessment, the ENT Surgeon will discuss treatment options which are tailored to your airway assessment and symptoms. These may, strategies to improve Nasal Breathing, and Positional Measures to reduce Airway Obstruction during sleep. ENT specialists may also refer you for Oral Appliance Therapy or Respiratory Sleep Medicine to support your overall Sleep Health Management.
