Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT‑I) is an evidence‑based, non‑medication treatment for sleep difficulties, particularly persistent insomnia and COMISA associated with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. It helps people recognise and change unhelpful thoughts, behaviours, and habits that interfere with sleep. A trained CBT‑I therapist provides structured guidance and teaches practical, long‑lasting skills that can support better sleep, improved daytime functioning, and reduced reliance on sleep medications, helping patients feel more in control of their sleep.
Process of our Oral Appliance Therapy Program
1. First Step
If you feel you may benefit from CBT‑I, we recommend you discuss your sleep difficulties with your GP, Respiratory Physician, or another healthcare provider, who can help decide if this approach is appropriate for you. We also welcome external referrals, and you can contact our clinic for more information, and our team will be happy to help.
2. Assessment of Need
At your first CBT‑I appointment, the therapist will discuss your sleep difficulties in the context of Sleep‑Disordered Breathing, Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and COMISA along with your wider medical and sleep history and current routines. They will explore how your thoughts and behaviours interact with your sleep and sleep‑related condition, and develop a personalised plan for your treatment; focusing on how CBT‑I strategies can best support your sleep and overall management of your condition.
3. Treatment
Following your Assessment, if it is deemed medically appropriate, you may be offered Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT‑I), a structured, evidence‑based, non‑medication treatment for insomnia that is increasingly used when insomnia occurs alongside Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (COMISA). CBT‑I, guided by a licensed therapist focuses on changing unhelpful thoughts and behaviours around sleep, using approaches such as stimulus control, sleep scheduling, and strategies to manage worry and anxiety at night, helping improve sleep quality, continuity, and confidence in managing sleep.
